Fix a Slow Drain

A sluggish drain is a common plumbing problem, and several things can contribute to a slow drain. Often, the pop-up used to stop up a bathroom sink can collect a lot of hair and debris. Also, soap and other products can slowly collect in the drain and sewer pipes. The natural build-up collects over time and eventually reduces the drain flow. Unfortunately, this issue can’t be avoided. The only solution is to proactively clean the drain to keep it flowing.

Most homeowners can quickly open the drain or trap and remove a clog. Also, flexible plumbing tools are available that make it possible to clean a drain without disassembly. These plumbing tools are readily available at a home improvement store. Whatever your method, avoid a chemical drain cleaner. Many contain harmful chemicals that are toxic to your health and the environment. In addition, these corrosive chemicals can damage your drains and sewer pipes.

It’s less common, but the sink overflow may cause a slow drain. Not only does the sink overflow drain water that is too high, but it also allows air into the drain. This air helps your sink drain faster. So, if your sink is draining slowly, you may try clearing the overflow with a flexible plumbing tool.

A slow drain is a nuisance but can also be an early warning sign of a plumbing emergency. For example, you may have an obstruction in your pipe or a deteriorated line causing a blockage. Be proactive with maintenance and repairs. This can prevent a slow drain from becoming a plumbing emergency.
