District Continues Major Manhole Upgrade Program

The Ben Davis Conservancy District continues to make progress on one of the less visible but very important parts of the sewer system: manholes.

As of June, the District’s GIS records showed that 669 manhole lids had already been replaced, with additional lids still remaining to be upgraded. The Board also discussed purchasing more lids if remaining SRF funds are available so the work can continue.

Manholes provide access for inspection, cleaning, televising, and repair work throughout the sewer system. Replacing aging lids and improving manhole condition helps crews maintain the system more effectively and can also help reduce unwanted water entering the sanitary sewer.

It may not be the kind of project that gets a lot of attention, but steady work like this plays an important role in keeping the overall system reliable.
